Review for "I Can't Sleep" from Online Book Club
Below you'll find a full book review from Gabriela Contreras Gonzalez, posted in the Online Book Club forum.
Have you had one (or more) sleepless nights? Have you thought that there is nothing you can do to have a good night's sleep? Are you having problems with your partner because one of you can’t sleep? If you answered yes to these questions, I Can’t Sleep by Matthew Charles might be the book you need to change your sleeping habits and quality. This is a clear, simple, and well-researched book about improving sleep quality.
Using personal experience and scientific research, Matthew Charles created the perfect guide for sleep. Going over the importance of a good mattress, sleep hygiene, how to relax and prepare for bed (and respecting this space), the dangers of sleeping pills, sleep positions, and so much more, this book covers every possible topic about sleeping.
I loved the author’s simple writing style. Each chapter is perfectly crafted, short, and easy to understand. Each reader will be able to identify what is making them struggle with their sleep, as well as what they are doing to have a great night's rest.
Since I was a little girl, I’ve enjoyed sleeping next to someone, so I appreciated that the author included tips for couples. I am the type of person who sleeps better when sleeping with someone else (I always try to hold the other person’s hand or hold them while sleeping). As a little girl, I always wanted to sleep with my mom, and I knew I wanted to marry my partner after the first time I fell asleep next to him. But sleeping with someone else is not easy. I’m not only a hugger, but I also need extra blankets to keep myself warm. My partner, on the other hand, needs fresh air; blankets make him hot, and he used to believe he could never sleep with someone. As unexpected as it was, it was easy for us to get used to sleeping together, and we have used some of the tips the author suggested.
The only critique I have of the book is that, almost at the end, the author wrote a chapter called Quantum Connections, which consists of speculative ideas that combine quantum theories and the author’s personal experiences. I felt that this chapter broke my concentration; I struggled to understand why the author wrote it. The writing style in this chapter also felt opposite to the rest of the book, as its content was as simple and clear as the rest of the book. Unfortunately, this feeling of disconnection followed me until the last page of the book.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I struggled with the rating, as, other than the book’s final chapters, the book felt amazing and perfectly written. The book has been professionally edited, as I was not able to find any errors. The book also offers complete guides, suggestions, and explanations so that readers who are not interested in the scientific aspect of sleeping can also enjoy the book (these checklists and recommendations also make it easier to go over the book's contents quickly to make sure you do the necessary changes and improvements).
This book is suitable for readers of all ages; it can benefit those who are currently struggling with their sleep routine, their partners, or anyone interested in improving their sleeping quality. Honestly, this is the type of book everyone should read. Are you ready to have the best sleep of your life?
